Repurposing Drugs For Treatment Of Covid-19

Based on the preliminary data from clinical trials and considering the NIH and FDA recommendation, remdesivir and convalescent blood products are the most promising potential for COVID-19 treatment. The use of chloroquine, hydroxychloroquine, favipiravir, ivermectin, and colchicine might also be effective. Apilimod is now being evaluated in the clinic for its ability to prevent the progression of COVID-19. Another potential antiviral to emerge from the study is clofazimine, a 70-year old FDA-approved drug that is on the World Health Organization’s list of essential medicines for the treatment of leprosy. As with all drug repurposing projects, drug repurposing for COVID-19 undergoes these three steps before it can be considered for progression through the development pipeline: candidate drug identification; mechanistic evaluation of the drug effect in preclinical models; and evaluation of candidate drugs' efficacy in phase II clinical trials (Pushpakom et al., 2019).
